Asteroid Day Is Coming

Mark June 30 on your calendar, as “Queen rocker Brian May” and a group of fellow scientists have declared it “Asteroid Day.”

Their aim is to highlight the dangers facing Earth and track deadly asteroids that may be lurking in near-Earth space. They claim a small asteroid, perhaps only a few hundred yards across, hitting Earth would devastate a continent or trigger tsunamis.

Unfortunately for those of us who welcome the coming of some sort of meteoric finality to human life on this planet, the organization is actually looking to prevent an eventual collision, but given how difficult it is to get governments to spend money on anything that isn’t aimed at protecting the immediate interests of the extremely wealthy I am not particularly concerned that our extinction will be somehow averted by the concerted actions of do-gooders and Science types. Bring it on, asteroid! In the meantime, let’s all enjoy this video from the Flash Gordon soundtrack, which I am ostensibly putting up here because of the Queen/space connection but which really is something I pretty much have on repeat in the background all day every day anyway. Now let’s get smashing, space rocks!
