Maybe You Suck Because You're Too Sad To Be Happy

“Several large research studies conducted over the past few years show that a person’s personality naturally changes over the course of adulthood, in response to life events such as entering a committed relationship or advancing in a career. From the ages of 20 to 65, people report increases in positive traits, such as conscientiousness, and decreases in negative traits, such as neuroticism. Most people tend to become more agreeable, more responsible, more emotionally stable — in other words, their personalities improve. Psychologists call it the Maturity Principle. Researchers have also long known that friendly, outgoing, responsible people tend to be happier than shy, irresponsible, unsociable people. But in a new twist with lots of ramifications for therapists, researchers have learned that being happy to begin with may help change your personality.”
— Sorry, unhappy introverts, your pre-existing low level of joy will cause it to be more difficult for you to make yourself act like all the other people who have somehow convinced themselves — or are doing an amazing job of pretending — that there is glee to be found in life, that good things are as likely to happen as bad, and that greeting every day with a positive attitude and a sense that the universe cares about your mood and wants life to go well for you will, in fact, obviate the terrible nothingness that you face each time you step outside your door. Not only does life suck, it sucks even worse for you, and there’s probably not anything you can do about it, because you’re sad. God, you really are awful, aren’t you? No wonder no one wants to be around you. I’d tell you to cheer up but we both know you have nothing to be cheery about and it wouldn’t work anyway. I guess try to do your best running out the clock on the miserable months and years you have left, replete as they will be with selfishness, shyness and solitude. Ugh, you suck so bad. You miserable bastard.
