"The SoHo Of Midtown"
“The area, between Fifth and Eighth avenues from 34th to 42nd streets, has disputed borders not unlike Chinatown, with both neighborhoods surrounded by pricier, cooler neighborhoods (the Garment District being the current runt in size and glamour compared with Chelsea to the south, Hudson Yards and Hell’s Kitchen to the west, Times Square and the Theater District to the north, and Park Avenue to the east). But changing demographics have signaled a change in momentum as well…. The ‘Fashion District’ is one of the updated monikers for the neighborhood as it has coped with declines in recent decades. As recently as last year, it considered renaming itself ‘MiSo,’ for Midtown South, or ‘Devil’s Arcade,’ one of its past identities. But the search for the new has ended up embracing the old, according to Ms. Randall, although her group recently changed its name to the Garment District Alliance.”
