★★★★★ Trees glowed green on the cross street in the blinding light. There was a ghost of haze downtown, a little shimmer. An errand that had been easy, in concept, for days was doable. The sun went deeper into the subway grates underfoot than seemed possible, given the lowered angle. The temperature was exactly right, everywhere but in the hopeless climate control of the office. At home, whether the windows were open or not did not even register unless a siren went by.
