★ The dull light harmonized with the bleakness of the 50s in Midtown. If you had to be in it, you had to be in it. The clouds were a solid mass, in varied grays. Now and then a few drops of rain arrived on the breeze. The old dress shoe that hadn’t previously exploded was giving ominously along the seam that had failed in its partner. Not even shirtsleeves could be comfortable in the stuffy chill, but they were better than any other option.
