Another Idea For Opportunistic Etch A Sketch Marketing Campaign
“I expected it to go away like everything else in the news cycle. We had all kinds of headlines, but we wanted to steer the direction of the conversation in a little bit more of a positive direction.”
— Ohio Art Company president and CEO Larry Killgallon discusses a new ad campaign designed to take advantage of a Mitt Romney’s advisor’s remarks that his candidate’s positions were “almost like an Etch A Sketch.” I would have thought Killgallon was right in his original expectation. I mean, the product in the news now is Skittles, right? But, who knows, maybe this thing’s really got legs. Either way, if the company’s going to go for a big marketing push, what they should do is license Van Halen’s awesome 1983 rocker, “Little Guitars,” which features a chorus of “Catch as catch/Catch as catch…” that I, and I’m pretty sure every other 1980s adolescent, always misheard as “Etch A Sketch…” (In fact, I just learned the real words this morning — that’s 29 years of singing along wrong!) I’m sure they could even get Diamond Dave to change the lyrics for a new version for a commercial. What’s he going to be, above that?
