"Let's Go Get Drunk At The Lab!"
“Each student gets three drinks within 30 minutes. For consistency’s sake, only one type of drink is served: a mixture of 7UP, lime juice, cranberry juice and vodka tailored to the student’s body weight and gender so everyone ends up with similar blood-alcohol levels. The bottles of whiskey and tequila behind the bar look real but actually contain colored water.
The goal is a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level, the point at which it is illegal to drive in Arizona.
After the students drain their last drink, researchers wait 15 minutes to allow the alcohol to be absorbed into their bloodstreams. To make sure everyone is legally drunk, they use a Breathalyzer.
