America's Papers Freak You Out About Your Children
Your baby can’t talk; it is endangered by common household products; it will be shuffled into a public school where it will be ignored and poorly educated, at best! Feel the terror from the nation’s papers from this weekend!
• The Boston Globe fronted a Shocking Story about how children on disability… sometimes have speech and behavioral problems! And then they stay on these benefits for a very long time! (A “Delayed speech” diagnosis, for example, can qualify a kid for social security disability payments. Yes? Their point being: disability cases are supposed to get “a full medical review every three years, but from 2000 to 2008 the agency examined, on average, only 10 percent of the children,” and now they’ve pretty much given up completely. Because, we’re assuming: smaller government!)
• The Chicago Tribune went real big on the Hidden Hazard of Crib Bumpers. (This is one of those stories where children die so, you know, FAIR WARNING, read as needed/possible.)
• The San Francisco Chronicle went huge on Top Students Fleeing Oakland Public Schools. (One out of four Oakland students leave the public school system after fifth grade! They are going into charter schools and private schools! Because a number of people want to ransack the public schools for high-testing children to support their for-profit charter schools, so they can make a lot of money!)
